Prior to his retirement in November 2017 Ian was a Director of Lowther Forestry Group Ltd and Forestry Manager for the Lowther Estates. He also was involved in the management of trees and woodlands on many other Estates throughout the north of England specialising on the historic aspects of parklands and woodlands. Until late 2023 he was the Hon. Secretary for the North West division of the Royal Forestry Society, he is a past representative of the Cumbria branch of the Ancient Tree Forum and a former trustee of the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group. In July 2016 he was awarded the Royal Forestry Society SYLVA Trophy for outstanding contribution to Forestry.
