Peter has a degree in engineering and is a chartered accountant. He was a director of his family group of companies, Lake District Estates, for some 40 years retiring in 2023. He is now President. The Lake District Estates businesses include Ullswater Steamers, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, a number of caravan parks and Peter Rabbit and Friends shops. He is a Trustee of the Lake District Foundation and was previously a Trustee and Chairman of the Cumbria Community Foundation.
Ullswater Steamers began operation in1859. Ever since then, they have performed a central role in the economy of the valley. This talk explores the fascinating history of the boats, piers and people, the successes and the disasters right up to the present day. The importance of silver, weed, the Kaiser, Thomas Cook and Cunard will all be revealed.
